Basil Sunny wins maiden national title at Indian Supercross Championship final

Basil Sunny of Ernakulam secured his first National title at the MRF MoGrip FMSCI Indian National Supercross Championship final, held at the GVMC Indira Priyadarshini Municipal Stadium in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, on February 9. Despite racing with a torn ligament and a fractured left toe and postponing medical treatment to complete the season, Sunny’s determined and consistent performances earned him the championship, according to a release.
Although he did not win a moto during the six rounds, Sunny’s continual top finishes proved crucial in claiming the title. Reflecting on his achievement, Sunny said, “I feel relieved and it is such a wonderful feeling to win my maiden championship title despite all the on-field and off-track drama. Last 15 days I delayed treatment from my injured leg only to complete this final round. I am glad that hard work and sacrifice ultimately bore fruit.”
The premier SX1 category was claimed by Pune’s Rugved Barguje, who secured his sixth Indian National title. Barguje, a five-time National champion, focused on consistency and race craft rather than risk-taking, overcoming challenges from Ikshan Shanbagh who exited midway through the final moto. Another TVS rider, Prajwal Vishwanath, earned the Rider of the Day accolade in the final round but was not a contender for the overall title.
The Visakhapatnam round was the first time the coastal city hosted a motorsport Nationals event under the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India. The championship, promoted by Godspeed Racing and supported by MRF and Sidvin, was conducted professionally by the RRR Motor Sports Association, led by Rishi and volunteers, with praise from riders.
In the Novice category, Shailesh Kumar of TVS Racing from Coimbatore secured the National title through skillful technique and composure. Banteilang Jyrwa of Shillong dominated the Indian Experts class with commanding rides throughout the season. The Private Experts division was won by Abhi S Nath from Coimbatore.
Jinendra Sangave achieved dominance in the Junior SX1 category with consistently strong performances, while Pune’s Chaitanya Joshi, known as “Jr Professor”, claimed the 85cc Junior SX2 title with mature and tactical racing. The Junior SX3 class title went to Vismay Ram Y of Bengaluru.
